Some Indonesian Clerics Allow 2012 Movie

Starting Friday, November 13, Hollywood’s latest flick, ‘2012” was publicly opened for viewing. The Roland Emmerich-directed movie depicts the situations in 2012 during the end of the world.

Pros and cons were rising. Religious figures have been giving their views on the movie. Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Malang and Solo even forbid Muslims to see ‘2012’.

However, the Ulemas in Jombang apparently have a different take. The Jombang MUI allows people to watch the film although reminding them not to believe that the world would really end in 2012 like the movie portrays.

“Please watch the movie but don’t believe in the time set for the doomsday in the movie,” MUI Jombang Secretary, KH. Junaidi Hidayat said on Tuesday, November 17.

According to Hidayat, the movie, which tells about the destruction of the universe, is worth to muse on. He said it was not wrong to visualize the doomsday on a film.

“Honestly, I haven’t watched the movie. But, I don’t see anything wrong about the depiction of the end of the world because it’s also written in the Koran and Hadith,” he said.

But, he reminded that Islam disallows its followers to believe in the prophecies predicting the time the universe would collide because it is something that people would never be able to figure out.

“Only Allah knows the time. Even the Prophets don’t know and weren’t told about it”, Hidayat said.
